Local health departments (LHDs) are critical in responding to public health emergencies. These institutions formed the backbone of the COVID-19 response and have also responded to infectious disease threats such as Zika, influenza outbreaks, congenital syphilis, and RSV.
On June 7, the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee held a hearing titled, “Looking Back Before Moving Forward: Assessing CDC’s Failures in Fulfilling its Mission.”
At the recently concluded NACCHO Preparedness Summit in Atlanta, GA, a workshop on risk communication in public health emergencies highlighted how disasters like COVID-19, Mpox, and the Ohio train derailment have affected the public’s ability to trust messaging from the government.
These new resources can be personalized in your health department, and offer guidance to public health officials to use as they identify and circulate relevant information during disasters caused by natural, man-made, and technological hazards.
