Local health departments can engage in a variety of HAI-infection control activities. Many health departments make recommendations to facilities to guide their efforts to improve infection control practices after an outbreak. However, LHDs can also engage in more proactive infection control activities, such as working to enhance regional communication to prevent inter-facility spread. Local health department staff in Kent County, Michigan developed inter-facility transfer forms and standards to provide facilities with the resources to improve communications and reduce inter-facility spread of HAIs.
