Educating the Public Health Workforce: A Model Partnership between Academia and Practice

Sharing Session (60 minutes)
Thursday, Jul 15
4:15 PM - 5:15 PM
Room 15
Conference Track:
Best Practices and Their Impact on the Six Winnable Battles

This session focuses on a model collaboration between the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, the Texas Public Health Training Center, and the University of Texas School of Public Health to increase public health leadership capacity. The collaboration includes workforce development programs (e.g., public health grand rounds series, staff development classes, an undergraduate online certificate program aimed at practitioners) and sharing expertise and staff duties between the school and local health department. These programs will assist in accreditation efforts and increase cultural competency between academia and practice. Examples of programs will be discussed and small group discussions will be used for the exchange of information and ideas between participants.
