Recent health assessments conducted by the New Madrid County Health Department indicated that the most significant health disparities in the county were in rates of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and other obesity related health conditions, particularly among African American and American Indian populations. The local health department developed a multi-tiered approach to address this disparity focusing on increasing physical activity and improving nutrition through collaboration with schools and churches. These partnerships, along with incentives, are designed to increase participation in activities.
