MyNACCHO LoginEffective vaccine communication must begin with understanding the unique needs and concerns of the intended audience. By working closely with communities and testing messages with them directly, local health departments (LHDs) can create vaccine communication materials that are culturally responsive, relevant, and impactful.
To support this effort, NACCHO, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), awarded funding to ten LHDs across eight different states to participate in the Strengthening Immunization Program Communications and Outreach Capacity project. This initiative focused on strengthening immunization messaging and outreach strategies across all age groups.
As part of the technical assistance provided to participating LHDs, NACCHO developed a collection of trusted, topic-specific resources. These materials were designed to help LHDs strengthen their immunization communications with populations identified at the start of the project period. These resources can help guide other LHDs in planning, testing, and refining vaccine messages to increase confidence and uptake across diverse communities.
Health departments are encouraged to explore these resources and consider incorporating community feedback and message testing into their vaccine communication planning processes. By grounding messaging in community voices and perspectives, LHDs can better address vaccine hesitancy and improve trust in all vaccines.
