NACCHO Publications Trending in Environmental Health in 2025

Jan 02, 2026 | Anu Varma

Our metrics show that these resources have been most helpful for local health departments (LHDs) this year. Don’t miss out on these NACCHO publications guaranteed to help you advance your vital work.

Food Safety

  • Use NACCHO’s Crosswalk based on the 2022 Public Health Accreditation Board Standards (PHAB) and the 2024 FDA Retail Program Standards (RPS) to get your LHD to the finish line faster, showing how LHDs meeting both PHAB and RPS requirements can avoid duplicative efforts. View a step-by-step resource for LHDs preparing for an FDA Retail Program Standard 9 Risk Factor Study for the very first time, including a FREE template of a Risk Factor Study report based on those created by other LHDs in the past. To access the Crosswalk, guide and template, go to naccho.org/blog/articles/new-food-safety-resources

  • Get your LHD’s workforce fully prepped for food safety careers with our popular training resource guide: naccho.org/uploads/downloadable-resources/factsheet_workforce_foodsafety_july2025.pdf

Mosquito and Tick Control

  • In response to a fall nationwide increase in emergency department visits from tick bites, NACCHO released a blog for health departments containing practical information to share with communities, as well as tools that LHDs can use as part of tick control and prevention efforts. naccho.org/blog/articles/tick-control-resources

  • In 2024, Puerto Rico declared a public health emergency for dengue, a viral disease spread to people through mosquito bites. During a 2024 NACCHO workshop, vector control professionals from Puerto Rico recorded lessons learned from the early months of their dengue emergency response. naccho.org/blog/articles/dengue-puerto-rico

Extreme Weather

  • Planning protective extreme heat interventions for next summer? NACCHO’s joint webinar with the University of Washington introduces CHaRT — a virtual tool that can be used by local health departments seeking tailored risk reduction activities based on local factors in the regions they serve. In case you missed it, see the webinar recording at naccho.org/blog/articles/webinar-chart-tool

  • See current trends and useful communication and funding strategies identified by local public health staff to support and sustain future environmental health efforts.  naccho.org/uploads/downloadable-resources/cc-comms-guide-2025-final.pdf

Wastewater Monitoring

  • NACCHO’s Fostering Local Wastewater Monitoring Network (fondly referred to as FLoW-Net) is a burgeoning Community of Practice engaging LHDs interested in wastewater monitoring, regardless of their experience level. NACCHO staff hosts virtual meetings for FLoW-Netters to hear from local jurisdictions and subject-matter experts. To request to join this community, visit naccho.org/blog/articles/flow-net
